UGG · Chestnut, Burnt Cedar, Dusted Cocoa
Brown UGGs do not come in just one shade. UGG calls its classic brown Chestnut: it is the shade of the Classic that everyone has in mind. Then there are the dark tones, Burnt Cedar and Dusted Cocoa, and the medium browns, Rocky Oak and Oak. We have collected them all here, for women and men: boots, slippers, sneakers and loafers. A style appears on this page if it looks brown in person, not just in its color name.
Chestnut, UGG's brown
This is the color UGG is known for, a warm brown with leather undertones, and it is the shade with the widest selection in our boutique. For women's boots: the Classic Mini II in sheepskin and suede, the Classic Mini Heritage in suede with visible sheepskin stitching and a boot-shaped charm, the Classic Ultra Tall with its 38-centimetre shaft, and the lace-up Classic Heritage. Among the slippers, the Funkette with its 6-centimetre platform, the Disquette with its sheepskin collar, the Tazz II and the Tasman Maxi Curly in curly sheepskin. And the Zora suede ballet flats, for those who want the color without the boot.
For men, Chestnut appears on the Classic Ultra Mini, pre-treated for water resistance, the Neumel chukka with metal eyelets, and the Neumel Chelsea with its double elastic panel. Then there are the suede Shep loafers and the leather Shep Penny, plus the Lowmel and Minimel sneakers.
Dark brown UGGs: Burnt Cedar and Dusted Cocoa
For dark brown, UGG has two names. Burnt Cedar is a deep brown with reddish undertones: you will find it on the Ultra Mini Western, the low boot with cowboy-inspired embroidery and an asymmetrical edge, on the Disquette Heritage slippers in embossed suede, and on the Heritage platform lace-ups. Dusted Cocoa, a cocoa shade, is available from us for men: the Tasman II slipper and the Shep loafer.
Dark brown has a practical advantage: on suede, marks and signs of the road are less visible than on Chestnut. It does not offer protection; it is simply more forgiving.
Medium browns: Rocky Oak and Oak
Rocky Oak is a medium brown with subtle pink undertones that works well with light denim and grey. It is available on the women's and men's Tasman II and on the Tazz II with its 4.4-centimetre platform. Oak is the color of the Loften, the men's chukka in oiled full-grain leather: it is UGG for the office, with chinos and a blazer, and it does not look like an UGG until you notice the lining.
Which size to choose
The rule varies from style to style, and it is explained in our UGG size guide. Choose your usual size in the Classic Mini and Ultra Mini, and if you are between sizes, choose the smaller one: the sheepskin compresses during the first few weeks and the boot adapts to your foot. The Tasman stretches very little because the embroidered band is not elastic: choose your usual size, or the larger one if you are between sizes. The Tazz fits slightly generously. Choose the Lowmel as you would any sneaker.
With or without socks? Sheepskin UGGs are designed to be worn barefoot, and the sizing is based on that. If you will always wear them with thick socks, consider going up half a size, or up one full size on styles that do not come in half sizes.
How to keep brown suede clean
Chestnut suede shows water: a drop leaves a darker mark. Remove it by evenly dampening the entire surface with a barely wet sponge, then leave it to air-dry away from the radiator. Dry dirt can be removed with a soft brush, always brushing in the direction of the nap. For salt stains, grease and odours, see the guide on how to clean UGGs. Applying a suede protector to a new pair matters more than any cleaning routine.
What to wear them with
UGG brown works with almost everything you wear in winter: light denim, grey, cream and camel. We do not recommend a nearby shade of brown, such as a dark brown coat over Chestnut: the two browns compete with each other. Outfit ideas by style are in the guide on how to style UGGs.
If you are looking for a specific style, the short boots are in UGG Ultra Mini, while the slippers are on the UGG slippers page. All other colors are in the women's UGG and men's UGG collections.
Frequently asked questions
What color is UGG Chestnut?
It is UGG's classic brown, a warm brown with leather undertones; the name means chestnut. It is the color the brand is known for, and the one available in the widest range of women's and men's styles.
Which UGGs are dark brown?
The two dark tones we carry are Burnt Cedar, a deep brown with reddish undertones, on the women's Ultra Mini Western, Disquette Heritage and Heritage lace-ups, and Dusted Cocoa, a cocoa shade, on the men's Tasman II and Shep loafer.
Do brown UGGs stain more than black ones?
On light suede such as Chestnut, water is more visible: it leaves a dark mark that can be removed by evenly dampening the entire surface. Dark tones such as Burnt Cedar and Dusted Cocoa are more forgiving. In both cases, applying a suede protector to a new pair is the first step.
Can you wear brown UGGs in the rain?
Some styles, such as the women's Classic Mini II and men's Classic Ultra Mini, are pre-treated for water resistance and can handle the damp conditions of a bad-weather day. We do not recommend them in heavy rain: sheepskin and suede last much longer when they stay dry.
Which UGG size should you choose?
It depends on the style. Classic Mini and Ultra Mini: your usual size, or the smaller one if you are between sizes. Tasman: your usual size, or the larger one if you are between sizes. Tazz: slightly generous. Lowmel: like a sneaker.
Are there brown UGGs for men?
Yes: the Classic Ultra Mini and Neumel in Chestnut, the Shep and Shep Penny loafers, the Tasman II in Dusted Cocoa and Rocky Oak, the Loften chukka in oiled leather, and the Lowmel and Minimel sneakers.
