Dr. Martens 1B99 Women's Virginia Leather Knee-High Boots
Dr. Martens · Women · Authorized retailer
The women's Dr. Martens we carry in the boutique are mainly boots: the eight-eye 1460, in Smooth leather and softer Virginia leather, plus three platform styles, Sinclair, Jadon and Molly. Alongside them are the wedge Chelsea 2976, the tall 1B99 and Adrian loafers. Below, we explain how they differ and how they fit.
The platforms: Sinclair, Jadon and Molly
The Sinclair is made from Milled Nappa leather, soft and pebbled from day one, with a removable zip and yellow stitching. The Jadon has a 4.7-centimetre platform, grooved edges and an inner-ankle zip; the Jadon III keeps the same sole on softer, medium-weight Pisa leather. The Molly is the most feminine of the three: Buttero leather with a satin sheen, a 4-centimetre platform with a 5-centimetre heel, larger eyelets and two pairs of laces in the box, one in satin ribbon.
A zip is a life-changing detail on a tall boot: Sinclair and Jadon can be put on without unlacing everything, and the laces stay adjusted once and for all. If you are interested in platforms only for a few extra centimetres, also take a look at the women's boots from other brands. All Dr. Martens styles with a high sole are on the Dr. Martens platform page.
Non-platform boots: 1460 and 1B99
The 1460 is the boot from which everything else evolved. We carry it in Smooth, the brand's classic leather, and Virginia, a fine-grain leather that adapts to the foot much sooner: this is the Pascal version of the 1460, also available in the monochrome Mono variant. All feature Goodyear welt construction, with the upper and sole heat-sealed and stitched together.
The 1B99 is the taller version, with fourteen eyelets in Virginia leather and an inner zip that means you do not have to unlace it every time. It also works with skirts and dresses for a deliberate contrast.
Chelsea boots, loafers and Zebzag
The 2976 is the laceless Chelsea boot, with elasticated side panels; the women's version has a 4.7-centimetre wedge and is made from Polished Smooth, the brand's polished leather. Other laceless styles, including those from other brands, can be found among the chelsea boots.
The Adrian is the tassel loafer. We carry it in black Polished Smooth, in burgundy Arcadia leather, which reveals its undertones with wear, and in the Ben Tassel version in waxed Orleans leather, with a kiltie fringe and BEN sole with a pronounced tread. All styles are collected in the Dr. Martens loafers.
The Zebzag Laceless takes the 1460 and removes the laces: it is made from suede, with a Zebzag sole in EVA and PVC and a cushioned SoftWair footbed. The page also includes Dr. Martens bags and, while sizes last, Zebzag sandals for summer.
Which size to choose
Dr. Martens uses whole UK sizes, and the European conversion is not linear. According to our Dr. Martens size guide, they fit true to size: if you wear a whole size, choose it; if you wear a half size, go down to the nearest whole size, as the leather gives slightly with wear. The scale is the same for men and women; only the US conversion changes.
Break-in time depends more on the leather than the style. Classic Smooth is the stiffest and requires two to four weeks of gradual wear. Virginia and Nappa are comfortable almost immediately. The Adrian has a short break-in period around the instep.
Break them in without discomfort. The first few times, wear them for an hour at home with thick socks and heel protection, gradually increasing the time. A leather balm, such as the brand's Wonder Balsam, softens the upper. Always try them with the sock you will wear in winter: your foot should fit snugly, without excess space at the toe.
How to care for them
The product pages provide simple instructions. Clean Polished Smooth with a damp cloth, let it dry and then apply a wax-based polish, either clear or matching the colour of the shoe. Virginia requires a damp cloth followed by Wonder Balsam. For the rest of the brand, visit the Dr. Martens page, and for men, the men's Dr. Martens selection.
Frequently asked questions
How do women's Dr. Martens fit?
They fit true to size and are available only in whole UK sizes. If you wear a whole size, choose it; if you wear a half size, go down to the nearest whole size, as the leather gives slightly with wear. This is the rule in our Dr. Martens size guide.
Which Dr. Martens are soft from the start?
Those made from soft leather: the 1460 Pascal and 1B99 in Virginia leather, and the Sinclair in Milled Nappa. Break-in is minimal. Classic Smooth is the stiffest and requires two to four weeks of gradual wear.
How high are the Jadon, Sinclair and Molly platforms?
According to the product pages, the Jadon and Jadon III have a 4.7-centimetre sole, the Sinclair has a 4-centimetre platform and the Molly has a 4-centimetre platform with a 5-centimetre heel.
Are women's Dr. Martens different from men's?
There is one size scale in UK sizes for men and women; only the US conversion changes. Some styles, such as the 1460 Smooth and certain Adrian loafers, are unisex and offer women's and men's sizes on the same product page.
How long does it take to break in Dr. Martens?
Classic Smooth takes two to four weeks when worn gradually with thick socks and heel protection. With soft leathers such as Virginia and Nappa, break-in is almost unnecessary; with the Adrian, it is brief and mainly felt around the instep.
How do you clean the polished leather of Dr. Martens?
Clean Polished Smooth with a damp cloth, let it dry, then apply a clear or matching wax-based polish with a brush. Virginia leather, on the other hand, should be cleaned with a damp cloth and conditioned with Wonder Balsam.
