A shirt is the garment where the fabric matters more than the cut. Two styles with the same design, one in cotton poplin and one in silk, are two different garments: they drape differently, crease differently, and end up in opposite parts of your wardrobe. It is the one thing no product description explains, and the one you should decide on first.
Which fabric to choose, and for what
Cotton and poplin are the everyday choice: they hold their shape, withstand machine washing and do not create extra creases under a jacket. Poplin in particular has a compact, slightly glossy surface that gives a white shirt its clean appearance.
Silk does the opposite: it does not hold its shape, it slips, and that is precisely why it drapes over the body rather than shaping it. It is the fabric for evening shirts and for those worn tucked into trousers. We carry both pure silk - including habotai, which is lightweight, matte silk - and silk blends, which cost less and are easier to care for: the exact composition is always listed on the product page.
Crêpe de Chine deserves a line of its own: it is a tightly twisted silk, slightly grainy to the touch, that creases far less than smooth silk. If you like silk but are concerned about care, it is the best place to start.
Linen is the fabric of summer and it creases: that is its nature and not a flaw, but you should know it beforehand. Denim shifts the shirt into casual territory and withstands everything; satin and charmeuse are for evening wear, and show every crease.
The boutique's advice. If you are buying just one, choose white cotton or poplin. It is the only garment that works under a blazer, with jeans and over office trousers, and the only one that never gets tiring. A printed silk shirt is more beautiful to look at, but you wear it one-tenth as often.
The white shirt, which is the hardest to get right
It looks like the simplest garment, yet it is the one where people make the most mistakes, because there is nothing to hide behind: neither a print nor a colour to distract the eye. Only three things matter. The fabric, which should not be sheer - good-weight poplin solves the problem at its root. The collar, which should stand on its own. And the shoulder, where an inexpensive white shirt gives itself away from two metres.
It is also the garment that lasts longest when chosen well, and the one worth paying a little more for: you wear a white shirt a hundred times, a printed one ten.
Fitted, relaxed or oversized
A fitted cut is the classic office style and the one worn under a jacket: it requires an exact size and leaves no room for error. A relaxed fit, which is the cut of most of our styles, looks good tucked in or worn over trousers and is the most versatile.
Oversized does not mean a large shirt: it is a shirt designed to be loose, with a deliberately dropped shoulder. You do not achieve it by taking one size up - that simply becomes a shirt that does not fit properly. If you want volume, buy a style designed that way.
How to really wash them
Cotton and poplin: machine wash at 30 degrees, then iron while still damp - it is the trick that cuts the time in half. Linen is the same, knowing that it will come out creased anyway.
Silk requires more attention, but less than people say: hand wash in cold water with a neutral detergent, never wring it - blot it in a towel - and iron it inside out at low temperature. What really damages it is deodorant and perfume sprayed on top, not water.
The brands we carry
Marella and MM Max Mara are the most tailored part of the selection, with printed silks and Crêpe de Chine. MC2 Saint Barth is the most widely represented and brings a holiday mood, with lightweight linen and cotton.
Pinko and Twinset are contemporary - stripes, cropped styles and details - while Emporio Armani and Antonelli Firenze complete the selection with classic styles. Prices start at forty-four euros and reach two hundred and seventy, with most styles around one hundred and fifty.
If you are looking for something to wear over it, there is knitwear and jackets; for a complete look, dresses. All clothing is in women's clothing.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a good white shirt cost?
More than people are usually willing to spend, and it is the one garment truly worth it. The calculation is simple: a well-chosen white shirt can be worn a hundred times a year between the office, dinners and under a jacket, while a printed one reaches ten. Divided by the number of times you wear it, the expensive shirt is almost always the one that costs less.
What is the difference between a silk shirt and a silk-blend shirt?
Pure silk drapes better, feels cooler and has a lustre that a blend cannot reproduce; silk blends cost less, crease less and withstand washing better. It is not a quality scale but a choice based on use. The exact composition is listed on every product page.
How do you wash a silk shirt?
By hand, in cold water, with a neutral detergent or one specifically for delicate fabrics. Never wring it: blot it in a towel and leave it to dry in the shade, away from radiators. Iron it inside out at low temperature, preferably while still slightly damp. Silk's real enemy is not water but deodorant and perfume sprayed directly onto the fabric.
What is the difference between an oversized shirt and one size up?
Oversized shirts are designed to be loose from the outset: the shoulder is deliberately dropped, the sleeves are proportioned for that volume and the body falls straight. Taking one size up in a regular style only gives you a shirt that does not fit well, with the shoulder in the wrong place and long sleeves.
Do linen shirts crease?
Yes, it is in the nature of the fibre: no linen stays smooth after half an hour. You can reduce creasing by ironing it while still damp and hanging it up immediately after washing, but anyone who cannot stand creases should choose cotton or a linen blend.
We have a dedicated page for white: white shirts for women and men, with the difference between optical white, ivory and off-white.
